Hundreds of millions of acres of forests, wildlife habitat, fragile wetlands, pristine coastal areas, and open space-that once gone are lost forever-are being gobbled up and degraded by sprawl and uncontrolled development. Each year, nearly 3 million acres of farmland and more than 170,000 acres of wetlands disappear. Each day, more than 7,000 acres of open space are lost forever. We are losing our wild and special places. I applaud your efforts to address this problem by promoting legislation to dramatically increase and make permanent funding for protection of America's lands legacy. I urge you to insist that Congress include a permanent funding source for land and coastal resource protection in the government's annual spending bill. Unfortunately, some legislative proposals to increase funding for land and coastal conservation include environmentally damaging provisions such as incentives for increased offshore oil and gas drilling that will damage and pollute our oceans and coasts, the use of coastal funds for environmentally destructive activities, and damaging new restrictions on federal land acquisitions-in our national parks, wildlife refuges, and forests-already authorized by law. Please oppose any version of the legislation that includes these provisions. As we approach the new millennium, I also urge you to direct the federal government to accelerate its efforts to protect and preserve -through land acquisition and other appropriate means-what remains of the natural grandeur that has helped define us as a nation. Please help reverse this trend of loss and degradation and make protection of our special places a top priority for our nation. Sincerely, insert name address and country Take Action Now!!!
