And I can highly recommend a wondefully written and motivating, moving book about a German Boxer dog enthusiast whose autobiographic book was written during WW2 detailing her immense struggles during the war to keep her animals and how others abandoned theirs. The woman was also a splendid artist and sculptress and her book has numerous little dog sketches by her along the margins of every page. The book, last I heard is out of print, but I obtained a copy from an inter-library loan at the local library for a nominal fee of a buck or two. I liked it well enough I read it twice then xeroxed the entire book since I couldn't find a used copy. Translated from original german it is: The author is Freiderun Stockmann, " My life with boxers " Popular dogs publishing co L.O.C. ISBN# 68-14303 236 pages Mike
Guest guest
Thanks for that, Mike. I owned a Boxer for 9 years - DANO, so can relate to the book. They're magical companions. Just big kids really. There's been lots of acts of animal heroism during wars which have been sadly ignored. But things are gradually changing, as there's an increasing call for a memorial in Britain for a memorial to animal war victims. - Paul. You are welcome, and I hope you and others do go take the time to locate that book. By the way, Freiderun Stockmann the author hand carved during the war in Germany- a lifesized replica of a Boxer with several puppies. Sometime later she decided to crate it up and ship it to the USA, she simply gave it as a gift to someone she knew. Subsequently it was donated to the Boxer Club of America who displays it at their annual show. I saw a photo of it in DogWorld magazine, what an amazing woman she was.
