Nutritional yeast, cayenne pepper, etc

Can we tell food tales here and ask food questions?

I just sent you a recipe for Mexican Pie. When I made it yesterday I

reached into the cupboard for the small bag of nutritional yeast I bought

at Whole Foods eons ago and never used. I measured out the 1/3 cup, poured

it on top of the tofu and then stuck my nose in the top of the bag so see

what nutritional yeast smelled like. Yikes!!!!! The bag was full of

cayenne pepper! I sure had a reaction to that.

Actually I was more worried about scrapping the cayenne off the tofu so

that I didn't have to go out and buy another block of tofu. I did a pretty

good job of it. Hey, no wonder my DH loved the recipe, it was full of cp!

I was looking up the nutritional value of nutritional yeast in " Whole Foods

Companion " (which by the way was a great buy at Half Priced Books for only

$14.95) and the author said that it is the same as Brewer's Yeast. Haven't

I heard a dozen discussions on the internet which says that the two are not

the same?

Kathleen:

Yes -- " food " , recipes, ingredients, preparation, etc. discussion is

okay. What I am wanting to avoid is just " general " discussion or

vegetarian " lifestyle " , " AR " , etc. There are lots of other lists for

that (like Veglife). We have lots of people on the list who are not

vegetarian but do enjoy vegetarian cooking and eat lots of vegetarian

meals. So, the real purpose here is to share recipes but, of course,

people will have recipe requests or questions about ingredients or where

to find them or about preparation. Hope this makes sense.

As far as the yeast thing -- brewer's and nutritional are,

technically, two different types, but they are sometimes used

interchangably. I recommend " Red Star " Brand nutritional yeast -- it is

the only one found to contain B-12.
