Guest guest
I know, I know -- I'm a vegetarian, and I'm supposed to eat tofu, right? Well, I don't really. It's not that I don't like it. It's okay. I think the *main* reason I don't really eat it is just to fight the stereotype that vegetarians eat tofu or that you have to eat something to " replace " the m**t. I know it's good for us, and we should try to get more soy products in our diet, so I will try. That said, I am posting this to report what I just read in the April 1999 Bon Appetit: White Wave has some new baked tofu products that are available in Thai, Italian, Mexican, and other flavors. It can be added to stir-fries, burritos, etc. It's pre-cooked and can be eaten right out of the package. The little article says to look for this product in supermarkets and natural food stores, but doesn't say where in the store we might find it -- It doesn't say if it is a refrigerated, frozen, or shelf product (like Mori Nu). Has anyone seen or tried this product? Let us know if you have or if you do and how you have used it. Sounds interesting. Karen -- Karen C. It is with the rest of the tofu in the refrigerated section. A friend of mine bought some last week, I will check with her whether she has used it yet. BTW, I like White Wave tofu, it's the best I've tried. Last week I was using some in a stir fry and I browned the slices of tofu first in a hot chili oil, boy was that good! I was munching on the tofu by itself before I put it in the stir fry! Marguerite ---------- Marguerite Rodgers (Tennessee) UKMAR
Guest guest
HI Karen .. there is a health food store around the corner from me Manna Mills and they teach classes all the time . The last class i took was on TOFU.. She showed us the prepared tofu and it is in the refrigerator section But we didnt get to eat any. One of her ideas was that you could throw your old tofu (on due date) into the freezer and when it thaws it looks just like chicken .. she passed that around and sure enough you could fool any chicken lover It was just a beginners class and it was OVERPACKED.. she had chocolate pudding , marinaded tofu,Sweet and sour balls that was very good. A few more of her tips were If you want the tofu to have a crispy texture in your food Dry it out as much as you can .. (laying it on paper towels and keep taking the water out of it) Also you can replace eggs with tofu in pancakes quick breads and eggs salad (tried egg salad - she also used a tofu based mayo <-- yuck but the consistancy of egg salad was good ) i wasnt impressed with tofu mayo . 1/3 cup tofu = 1 Egg For pudding .. Blend tofu + carob= chocolate pudding For smoothies... Blend fruit with tofu + some soy milk if its too thick Both of these were delicious!!! you would never ever know it was tofu. The also showed a snack " Edamame " Soy beans you boil for five minutes and take soy beans out of the pods .. they are to be sweet (didnt get to try some ) but i have a bag ready to try She is going to have a class beyond that beginner class I hope to go to Susan in Seattle --------------------------- Anything is good and useful if it's made of chocolate. --------------------------- Karen C.
