Guest guest
Tempeh (say Tem-pay, like the town in Arizona) is a soy product. It is a traditional polynesian food. Soy is fermented with grains and pressed into 'cakes'. It is much more delicious than it sounds. You can buy it fresh or frozen in the health food stores. It is also used extensively in Macrobiotic. cooking. Tempeh and sauerkraut is a favorite winter time dish of my husband's. I prefer tempeh to be well cooked, or it has a 'beany' taste to me. It has a chewy consistency and can be used to substitute for a 'meaty' texture in many dishes. Sometimes you'll find tempeh made with different grains, barley, rice, millet, etc. They are all also made with soy, and I have not found much difference in these products. Except the marinated tempeh products, they are all quite tasty. My favorite so far of those is the Lemon Broil. Just heat in the toaster oven and it's good to go.
