I'm a " total " vegetarian: no eggs, no dairy, but we do use honey.

I was about 25.

Well, I'd never liked eating dead animals, but tried not to think about

it. I

mostly became vegetarian to lose weight on a weird diet (Fit for Life)

and after

that, I could never go back to eating meat. I gave up eggs and dairy

for health

reasons.

>

No, but I do care about animals very much.

>

We live on an island in Alaska.

>

My children are both vegetarians also.

>

> How many vegetarian friends do you have?

I don't have any vegetarian friends except a couple online friends.

I've never

even personally met another " real " vegetarian. Oh, wait, I take that

back.

<G> A few years ago I knew some fellow homeschoolers who were also

vegetarian--they were Seventh Day Adventists. I only knew them for a

very short

time, but I did take a cooking class they were giving at their church.

>

> Do you try to eat organic?

I would if I could, but it is almost impossible to find organic food

here.

There is a natural food store and I buy what I can from them. I buy

mostly

organic flours, rice, and other grains, if possible, but we rarely get

organic

fresh fruits & veggies.

>

> Are your friends and family supportive of your vegetarianism?

Some are and some aren't. My husband still eats meat and he is pretty

supportive. Family members tried hard to be accommodating until I had

children

and decided to raise them vegetarian. My MIL has never stopped trying

to

convince the kids not to be vegetarian.

>

> Do you wear leather or other animal products?

Probably. I don't wear leather clothing, but I have no idea if my

Nikes are

leather or not.

>

> cookbook?

This is too hard. I have lots that I love. For a cookbook that I use

a lot,

though, it would have to be one I got from my Seventh Day Adventist

friends.

It is called The Real Food Cook Book by Jurea L. Dawson. I've had this

book

for several years now and it's falling apart because it's been used so

much.

It is just comb-bound, probably self-published.

I also really like High Road to Health. That's another cookbook I've

used a

LOT. I also have all of the McDougall's books and use them as much as

The Real

Food Cook Book or more.

I like homemade oat burgers. Yum. I also like some fat free burgers

that are

by Lightlife, I think. They hardly ever have them in the Safeway here,

but

every once in a while they'll get a few in. I forget exactly what they

are called. My kids also like homemade tofu burgers. My son likes

Harvest Burgers.

>

> veggie dog?

Well, we've tried several different kinds and I haven't noticed that

much

difference. I used to buy Smart Dogs most of the time. Now, though,

all we can get is Veggie Dogs, I think they are by Yves, but I'm not

sure.

>

> frozen entree?

I don't know. I have seen some in the natural food store, but they are

so

expensive and most don't seem to be vegan, so I don't really know.

>

> brand?

Brand of what?

>

> mail order catalog?

For vegetarian stuff? The Mail Order Catalog--although I've only

ordered from

them once. I don't really know of any other vegetarian catalogs. I'd

love to

know of any there are.

>

> store?

Cactus Flats is our only local natural food store. They do a fantastic

job

here, considering this is a fairly isolated island and a very small

community. They carry a wide variety of products and are very

accommodating about ordering anything I want.

There is another store in Anchorage--I think it may be called Annie's.

I like

that store, too. They have a little restaurant too, which is good.

>

> restauraunt?

Chimes Cafe in North Conway, New Hampshire.

>

> milk alternative?

I buy Rice Dream Enriched regular flavor and mix it 50/50 with soy

milk. I

always used to get Edensoy Extra, but that has gone up in price and is

SO

expensive here. The same people that put out the rice dream now have

soy milk

and it's a lot less expensive, so I've been getting that lately. It is

enriched

also. It's called Soy Dream.

>

> cheese alternative?

I use the recipe from The New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook for their pizza

cheese.

I use this for pizza and for grilled cheese sandwiches and also for a

yummy

potato lasagna (got the recipe from Emeril <G>). It's pretty

versatile.

Another favorite cheese alternative is Mock Mozzarella Cheese that I got

from my

Seventh Day Adventist friends. This makes an AWESOME lasagna. I also

used to

use this recipe for pizza cheese, but for some reason my son liked the

New Farm

recipe better and I just started using that all the time.

I also have a wonderful recipe for a cheese sauce for macaroni and

cheese. I

got it from somewhere on the web. It's great.

>

> egg substitute?

I use egg replacer for baking and in casseroles and things like that.

>

> entree?

One of my current favorites is the baked marinated tofu from Sundays at

Moosewood cookbook. I serve this with plain brown rice and lots of

veggies.

I also love to make a stir fry with a sauce on it. I serve this over

rice. I

don't really have a recipe for it, so it is never exactly the same. I

use

different veggies, but almost always include broccoli, carrots, and

zucchini

with whatever else I put in it.

>

> dessert?

Chocolate pie, of course! :-) I have a wonderful vegan recipe. The

recipe

for the pudding is from The Real Food Cook Book. It's supposed to be

made with carob, but sometimes I use real cocoa instead--especially if

it's to share with non-vegetarian people. Last Thanksgiving I made this

and served it to our guests and they loved it. They never even asked

if it was vegetarian.

>

Candy? I don't know. I can't think of any.

>

Oatmeal banana split

Blueberry pancakes

Scrambled tofu with browned potatoes

(I never make these things for breakfast, though. <G> We usually have

them for

dinner. For breakfast we eat mostly cold cereal or hot cereal. I

don't make them all at the same time, either. <G>)

Meat alternative? I'm not sure what that is? You already asked about

veggie burgers, so you can't mean that...

I don't know... I do love to make a seitan roast sometimes. It isn't

anything

like a real roast and I wouldn't want it to be, but it does remind me a

bit of

the little " eye of the round " roasts my mother used to make when I was a

child. I do usually serve it with mashed potatoes and a brown gravy

also. I like it and my kids like it, but I don't know if anyone else

would.

>

> way to prepare tofu?

Marinated & baked! <G> I also love to make " Browned Tofu " which uses

tahini &

soy sauce and other stuff to coat it then you brown it in a frying pan.

>

> way to prepare tempeh?

I used to love a tempeh salad--I guess it was sort of like a chicken

salad, but

nothing like it at all, really. I also used to love to make a " Swiss

tempeh "

in my pressure cooker, using the recipe that came with the cooker for

Swiss

steak. You cooked the potatoes and carrots right in there with the

tempeh and

tomatoes and it was very yummy. I no longer have a pressure cooker,

though, so

I haven't made this in years.

>

> way to prepare seitan?

Oh...I love to do it as a " roast " (as mentioned above)--I make it into a

log and then wrap it in cheese cloth and simmer it for a few hours. My

daughter loves it another way. We break it up into little bits and cook

it in a tomato sauce stuff. That's

yummy, too.

I can't think of anything. Wow! This was a lot of questions. Well,

it will be fun to read other responses.

Thought it would be healthier - did not like horrible

bits about meat such as fat and veins in it.

Hi,

My name is Michelle. I just joined your list lastnight. I'm hoping to

pick up lots of good recipes, meet some nice people, and hopefully I can

Please fill this out and send it back to the list! I want to get everyone's

viewpoints!

What type of vegetarian are you?

I don't like calling myself a vegetarian because the word doesn't

necessarily equal " healthy " to me so instead if need be I'll say what kind

of food I eat.

How old were you when you became a vegetarian?

I began eating along these lines when I was about 21 yrs. old.

How old are you now?

47

What was your main reason for becoming vegetarian?

Originally to avoid getting sick from eating poisoned meat.

Are you an animal rights activist?

No

where do you live?

Just moved from living in California for most of the last 21 years. Now

visiting in Indiana. Expect to travel further East for an unknown length of

time to work on starting a Biodynamic Farm.

Is anyone else in your family a vegetarian?

No.

How many vegetarian friends do you have?

About a dozen.

Do you try to eat organic?

Yes.

Are your friends and family supportive of your vegetarianism?

Mostly.

Do you wear leather or other animal products?

Possibly. Do watch bands count?

What's your favorite vegetarian/vegan:

restaurant?

The Vegetarian in Escondido, California.

other comments:

My favorite meal is when I go into the home garden and pick a variety of

greens, herbs and vegetables then prepare a salad and sometimes a steamed

green. I will roll up the salad in sushinori sheets or in a freshly

heated/sauted tortilla.

You're welcome.
