Guest guest
Cable damage hits Net From AAP 21nov00 06:30 (AEDT) MILLIONS of Internet surfers in Australia, Asia and Europe were facing further chaos today after damage to a major undersea cable linking the three continents threw connections out of whack. The 39,000km SEA-ME-WE 3 cable - the world's longest telecommunications system - was damaged on the sea floor about 100km from Singapore at 3.20pm yesterday, according to newspaper reports this morning. Hundreds of Australian Internet service providers (ISPs) use it, including Telstra, according to the reports. It is understood Australia's biggest ISP, with more than 650,000 rs, relies on the cable for 60 per cent of its traffic. Users experienced delays, slow access or no access at all. Telstra Bigpond spokesman Stuart Gray was quoted as saying that Internet traffic last night was " in a massive logjam " that was probably the biggest Australia had seen. With the damaged section of cable lying at a still unknown depth, it was impossible to say when the problem would be fixed. The cause of the damage to the $1.7 billion cable - built to speed up Internet access - is unknown. back
