Guest guest
This letter is not intended to offend, dispute, or in anyway imply that the USA does not have issues regarding Animal Welfare that need to be addressed. It is only my intention to give information, and to help with questions and or answers regarding these issues in whatever way I can . This is a reply I rec'd., to my inquiry about the rumor of a dogmeat slaughter house in Greenbay Wisconsin. It is not really an adequate answer, to the concern of many. And will need to be pursued. However, I believe that this " slaughterhouse " , if indeed it does exist, would not be the typical processing plant seen in the USA for slaughter and processing. They are huge plants, usually very out in the open, and obvious. My guess is that if this place does exist, it is more of a backyard, family, " mom-pop " operation, that few if any are aware of. Our federal laws regarding the processing of animals for food, are governed by the USDA,(United States Dept. of Agriculture). It would be illegal to run a business processing food products for human consumption without a USDA license, and inspection of your business by USDA officers. Albeit, USDA is not always as thorough as we would like, and things do happen that should not, it is certainly not a perfect system. However, since it is ilegal to use dogs or cats for fur, I am reasonably sure it is also illegal to consume them. I am not sure,(have been unable to find specific federal law), the USDA website is huge, very technical, and difficult to interpetate. I do know that some states forbid the use of dogs/cats for consumption. So I am sure there is a federal law regarding this somewhere, because many state laws are in place because of federal rulings. The other issue is this, there are various rumors circulating about the treatment of livestock in the USA, bear in mind that many of these are indeed just rumors. I live in an area where cattle, hogs, sheep, etc. are raised for meat and by-products. I can assure you that most of these ranchers, and the processing plants that the animals are sent to ,try to treat, and care for the animals as best as possible. It is after all a business, and if the animals were not cared for, well fed, or were allowed to sicken it would be money out of the ranchers pocket. There are of course exceptions to every rule. Typically here in the USA, when abuses are found out, they are addressed with severe punishment, fines and even closures of plants that process. Transportation of, and slaughtering is a continuing concern to all who care about the humane treatment of any animals. It is, and will be a continuing issue until more laws are in place to protect the animals. None of which will happen overnight. I would also like to suggest, that many of thes rumors, are possibly started by people in Asian,as well as USAand other countries, that are offended by the letters, and activity of Animal Welfare people, intervening to stop the inhumane treatment of animals in those countries. I would ask that when posts are made regarding these issues in the USA that research be done, and information regarding location, names of offenders, district attorney/county attorneys, where possible be given. I am including a link to one of the USDA websites pages with information on animal welfare, for any who are interested in researching USA laws regarding these issues. http://www.nal.usda.gov/awic/legislat/usdaleg1.htm The letter from Greenbay WI, mayors office follows my signature.
