JINAN: Thirty wild snakes have been rescued after being carried in plastic bags

on a train for hefty profits upon resale in Hubei Province.

In China, it is against the law to hunt, sell and transport wild animals. The

snakes were discovered last week and sent to Jinan Zoo in Jinan, the capital of

East China's Shandong Province.

The police have arrested one person. Investigations are still under way.

The snakes - 21 pythons and nine kraits - were rescued by the Qingdao

Forestation Bureau and local policemen on a train travelling from Wuchang, a

city in Hubei Province, to Qingdao, a coastal city in Shandong.

Both species have first-level State protection. Jiang Guangyuan, an official at

Jinan Forestry Protection Station, said the pythons and kraits come from

tropical or sub-tropical regions in Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan.

On November 17 police were told that someone had brought some wild animals with

them on the train from Wuchang to Qingdao. Policemen seized two big plastic

bags, which had the snakes inside.

The biggest python was more than 1 metre long, while the longest krait was 3

metres and weighed more than 20 kilograms. Even the youngest krait was more than

1 metre long.
