Guest guest
To:Mr Bill King, Sunday Mail. Adelaide, South Australia Dear Mr King, Your flippant report of a sheep left in the back of a car for hours with its feet tied up (31/12/2000) is beyond belief. The person who left the animal trussed up and helpless in a car during our hot Summer months should have been prosecuted for cruelty by the RSPCA. Sheep are no different to any other animal and deserve the basic necessities of water and shelter during the Australian Summer heat. I am complaining about this matter to the RSPCA. Shame on the Sunday Mail and yourself for your collective perceived acceptance of cruelty to animals. Marguerite Wegner (Vegetarian) The item below (complete with funny cartoon) appeared in Adelaide's Sunday Mail on 31st Dec, in the " Bill King " column which features short items considered to be light-hearted or funny. " Monash sheep property owner decided to bring home a ration sheep for the family larder. He tied its legs and, as he had the family sedan, rather than putting it in the boot, dumped the animal in the back seat. On the way, he dropped off at the local for a coldy, which turned into many. Knowing he was over the limit, he hitched a ride home and sent his son to collect the vehicle. Son saw the chance to go parking with his girlfriend. Unaware of the back seat passenger, they found their passion interrupted by a couple of pitiful bleats. " The following item appeared in the Bill King column last Sunday, 7th Jan. Obviously a lot of complaints were received (mine included!) " Not Deliberate To all those people who complained about the item on the trussed up sheep, I would like to point out that while I understand their concerns, there was no deliberate act of cruelty. The item dealt with one of the quirky things that happens from time to time. A selection of your comments are on our Letters to the Editor page. " The lame excuse above should have been a proper apology for such a callous attitude towards animals. 3 letters were printed and all slammed the item. We all know it would never had made the column if it had been a dog! To give you some idea of the truly compassionless nature of the column, a couple of weeks ago it was thought to be truly funny that a duck was killed after being hit by a golf ball (again complete with funny cartoon.) Only 1 item a week is considered funny enough to deserve a cartoon. Please feel free to email the Sunday Mail - just a sentence folks, would be really helpful. billking
