The creatures were captured under Japan's so-called research whaling program. The Institute of Cetacean Research said that some 181 tons of meat will be sold directly to consumers, while the remainder will be sold to food-processing companies that will convert them into whale meat products. The 574-ton meat haul was taken from a catch of 40 minke whales, 43 Bryde's whales and five sperm whales, the institute said. Minke whale meat will sell for 2,980 yen per kg for consumption as sashimi, while Bryde's whale meat will sell for 3,760 yen per kg, it said.
