Guest guest
Fwd from New Zealand (Isn't it convenient for researchers to make comments about the futility of extrapolating between rabbits and humans when it suits them!!! -Marguerite) In the 1980s Dow used the argument " there is no known means of extrapolating between rabbits and humans " in order to use vivisection as an alibi to continue production of 2,4,5-T, when rabbit experiments coincidentally showed harmfuul effects to rabbits in a laboratory. -Phil Chemical protesters invade Dow compound 02 MARCH 2001 http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,676154a11,FF.html The Daily News, New Plymouth, New Zealand Anti-dioxin activists burst through padlocked gates at New Plymouth's Dow Agrosciences plant on Thursday, allowing up to 80 protesters into the controversial chemical firm's main compound. But the main doors at the former Ivon Watkins Dow plant remained tightly locked, despite some protesters banging on the door as the crowd chanted, " close down Dow " . Six police officers were on hand throughout the protest but no arrests were made. After about five minutes of speeches in Dow's carpark, the crowd left peacefully, leaving behind anti-Dow banners and a mock, blackened skeleton bearing the name Dow. Many Paritutu residents living around the chemical plant blame production of the now banned herbicide 245-T at the site between the early 1960s and 1987 for some health problems. The Government last month announced it would blood-test about 100 Paritutu residents for dioxin. Thursday's rally, organised by New Plymouth man John Beggs, included representatives from the New Zealand Vietnam Veterans' Association, the Green Party, former sawmill workers, the Dioxin Investigation Network and Spotswood College students. Protesters called for United States-owned Dow Agrosciences to close in New Plymouth and go back to America. ---- NZ Anti-Vivisection Society (Inc.)
