Hi, I have been receiving conflicting info about whether or not there

is any cruelty to animals statute in China. I have heard that there

isn't but then I hear mention of people being brought under cruelty

to animals charges in China (April 5, " Pit bull terriers... for ex.)

If any one can tell me where I can find the actual language for a

statute like this, if one exists, I would be very apprectiative.

(Please post here or email to upzirons)

Thanks, Lindsay

Dear Lindsay,

I think what may be confusing you is the political situation.

China has a number of different administrative regions. For example - the

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macao SAR, the Tibet Autonomous

Region, the Province of Taiwan, etc. Each has its own laws.

Generally when we are talking about China, we mean the main bulk of Mainland

China excluding the special areas. Taiwan and Hong Kong (where the April

5th Pit Bull incident occurred) have animal cruelty laws similar to those of

Western countries.

Mainland China has, as far as I know, no anti animal cruelty laws as such

but action against cruelty can sometimes be taken using other statutes.

Jill Robinson of AAF is better informed than I am on the intricacies of the

Mainland legal situation - please write to her: info

Best wishes.

John.

There is something on the Hong Kong laws at:

http://www.aapn.org/legalissues.html

And on the Korean laws at:

http://www.aapn.org/koreanlaw.html

Both the WSPA site and the PETA site have out of date and scanty information

on the new animal protection law in Taiwan.

http://www.wspa.org.uk/campaigns/archive/taiwan4.html

http://www.peta-online.org/feat/taiwan/index.html

If anyone has a summary of, or information on, the animal cruelty laws of

Taiwan or Mainland China or any other Asian country, I should be glad to

post them on the AAPN website to form a comprehensive resource.

John.
