" Sick " abuser drowns baby bunnies

May 07, 2001

Mainichi Shimbun

KAWAGOE, Saitama - A pervert killed 13 rabbits being kept in a Saitama

Prefecture elementary schoolyard by flooding their cage, police said over

the weekend.

A caretaker of the Tsurugaoka Municipal Dai-ni Elementary School discovered

the drowned rabbits inside the 10-square-meter cage placed near the school's

gate before noon Friday and alerted police.

" We are devastated. We've been telling children how important life is all

the time and now this, " Principal Sashichi Nagano said. " I have to tell the

children about this when they return to school on Monday, but it's really

hard as they knew about new-born rabbits and were looking forward to seeing

them. "

The cage, the bottom part of which is made of bricks, was turned into a pool

as somebody used a hose connected to tap water and swamped it. An adult hare

and 12 recently born rabbits were drowned to death. A chicken and seven

rabbits survived the sick attack, a school official said.

Police said that the deranged attacker struck between 6:40 a.m., when a

caretaker last saw the rabbits alive, and 11:30 a.m., when he discovered the

carcasses. Investigators are pursuing the case on suspicion of willful

destruction of property.
