Killer bear shot in Sapporo

May 08, 2001

Mainichi Shimbun

SAPPORO -- A brown bear that mauled a man to death on a Sapporo mountain was

killed by hunters Monday near the location where it buried its victim,

police said.

Kenzo Kudo, a 53-year-old from Sapporo's Toyohira-ku, was reported missing

Sunday night after he went out to pick wild vegetables on a mountain in

Jozankei valley in the city's Minami-ku.

On Monday morning, a police search team, accompanied by hunters, entered the

mountain from a road where Kudo's family members found his abandoned car the

previous day.

They spotted a brown bear roaming some 300 meters from the car and shot it

dead.

Kudo's body was found buried nearby, police said. He was mauled on the head

and there were bite marks on his legs.

It is believed that the bear dug a cache and hid Kudo's body there after

killing him. The male bear, estimated to be 5 or 6 years old, was about two

meters in height and weighed 130 kilograms.

How can the police/hunters be sure they killed the bear they were after?? Or

is killing a bear, any bear, for revenge, what this is about? I really think

I may have missed something here.

I remember reading an article somewhere, which said that Japan has a " If it

moves, kill it " policy. And, unfortunately, this is true. Wild bears, like

wild macaques, in Japan are getting extinct but they still get killed by

thousands a year. Some poeple think we don't need them in the wild as long

as we have a few in zoos!

I haven't had enough info on this particular bear; I don't know if they

somehow determined that this was the one that killed the person or they just

killed the first one they found. But then again, if they made a mistake,

it's not a big deal since it was 'just a bear'.
