Toney has lived alone in a concrete and steel enclosure since 1977. Toney also displays stereotypical behaviour such as rocking, regurgitating, eating and playing with her own vomit and faeces. However, Toney can also be very affectionate and friendly with people. There are other animals in the zoo in similar conditions. The zoo has no vets or trained wildlife experts. Despite this, it has started a four year plan to expand and bring in more animals, including currently non existing ones such as giraffes, orang utans and more chimpanzees. We had a meeting with the zoo's asst. director last week. Since the zoo is state property and partly owned by the Sultan, they are in no position to make decisions on releasing the chimp. They have advised us to bring the matter to the Malaysian zoo association, and we are going up to Taiping, Malaysia, next weekend to meet it's vice president. We hope to persuade the zoo association to use their influence to stop any expansion of the zoo, and to release the chimp. IPPL (International Primate Protection League) is supporting us by funding our investigations and meetings. If you think you can help, or offer contact details of potential funders or wildlife/ zoo/ animal behaviour experts, please let me know. We can send a general report of the zoo, and video footage. Sincerely, Guna Subramaniam Singapore
