Soy sauce cancer scare

From AAP

THE National Food Authority says Asian cooking buffs should bin a host of

imported soy and oyster sauces from the pantry.

The Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) has placed an emergency ban

on some soy and oyster sauce imports found to contain high levels of

potential cancer-causing agents.

Quarantine officers have been asked to ban any imported soy and oyster

sauces containing dangerous levels of the chemical chloropropanol.

ANZFA has banned 22 brands from entering Australia, including sauce products

from Golden Mountain in Thailand, Pearl River Bridge in China, Lee Kum Kee

from China and Hong Kong and Wanjasham in Taiwan.

People should check their cupboards for the products and throw them in the

bin.

People should not fear being struck down with illness after one or two

stir-fry meals, with the effects believed to come from continuous

consumption.

Occasional consumption of the sauces was unlikely to cause adverse health

effects, ANZFA said.

Soy sauces manufactured using only a traditional, or natural, fermentation

process are regarded as safe.
