URGENT, WITHHOLD FUNDING FOR LFA DEPLOYMENT.

 

 

The Navy is about to receive approval to blast the world's oceans --

and the whales, dolphins, and other marine life that live in them --

with dangerous sonar.

 

As Congress decides over the next several weeks whether to appropriate

funds for deploying LFA. Please tell Congress to withhold funds for this

Dear Senator,

 

I am deeply concerned about the U.S. Navy's plan to deploy Low

Frequency Active (LFA) sonar, a dangerous new system, in as much

as 80 percent of the planet's oceans. LFA poses an unacceptable

risk to marine mammals and other ocean life around the world.

I strongly urge you to withhold funding for LFA deployment.

 

The Navy is about to receive approval to blast the world's oceans --

and the whales, dolphins, and other marine life that live in them --

with dangerous sonar. (see Important References #1 , # 2 ).

 

At close range, the noise that LFA generates is millions of times more

intense than the Navy considers safe for human divers and billions of

times more intense than levels known to disturb large whales.

It is no less than nuclear explosion. And because that noise

spreads so far, its environmental impact could be enormous.

 

LFA is expected to cause hearing loss in animals whose lives are governed

by sound (at even moderate noise levels it has been shown to disrupt the

communication, migration, and breeding activity of large whales).

It is expected to cause hearing loss and disruptions in communication

and breeding in animals whose lives are governed by sound. And, in the

worst case, it could result in strandings, serious injury, or death, as

in the Bahamas last year, where many whales stranded themselves and

died after a Navy sonar exercise.

 

Yet the Navy is seeking to deploy LFA without addressing some of the

system's worst potential impacts, such as the internal injury that is

believed to have occurred in the Bahamas whales; without adequately

examining the connection between active sonar and mass strandings;

and without evaluating the system's long-term, cumulative effects on

populations of whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea turtles, and

numerous other marine animals. To deploy LFA under these conditions

would be unconscionable.

 

In light of the substantial risks it presents to marine species and

habitat around the world, I strongly urge you to withhold funding

for LFA deployment. Thank you.
