Korea's contempt reaches new low

FOOTBALL fans will be served dog stew instead of half-time

pies at this summer's World Cup.

South Korean restaurant owners are targeting visiting fans to

the tournament, being co-hosted by Japan, as part of a drive to promote canine

meat abroad.

Stalls will be set up next to stadiums serving the traditional

dish of poshintang.

And fans who like the taste will be able to log on to websites

listing recipes for dog dishes.

It's all part of a push by 100 restaurateurs in South Korea to

convince the world that canine meat is both delicious and healthy.

Choi Han-kwon, of the 21st Century Startup Research Institute,

said: " The federation will promote the eating of dog meat during the

international event period by designating poshintang restaurants near World Cup

stad-iums as special places to serve foreign visitors. "

A conference will also be held near the South Korean capital

Seoul to discuss ways to make the traditional dish more appealing to tourists.

Chungchong University Professor Ahn Yong-keun - known as

Doctor Dogmeat - will ask chefs to set up English websites listing canine

recipes for the benefit of fans at the World Cup finals in May and June.

But the initiative is unlikely to impress animal rights

activists and animal-lovers all over the world who are horrified at South Korea

for breeding dogs especially for meat.

Some dogs are beaten, burned or hanged to make their meat more

tender.

(If this comes as a shock, it shouldn't. Korea has made no

attempt to mask its contempt for world opinion, although this time they have

plumbed new depths.

To those animal welfare organisations that have shied off from

calling for a boycott, Korea's message must be clear.

We call upon everyone that cares about the plight of companion

animals in Korea to join with us in our campaign. The time for half-measures and

excuses is over...........ITD)
