Guest guest
Tuesday, February 5, 2002 South China Morning Post http://hongkong.scmp.com/hknews/ZZZKFO1H5XC.html by CLIFFORD LO A live deer was found tied up in a plastic bag during a check by Customs officers on a lorry entering Hong Kong. The barking deer, weighing about 6kg, was found underneath the passenger seat as the lorry arrived at Man Kam To border checkpoint at midday on Sunday. " Our Customs officer heard some strange noises from the cabin and ordered the driver to pull over to our examination plant, " a spokesman for the Customs and Excise Department said. He said the young deer had suffered minor injuries, apparently caused by its struggles inside the bag. The 36-year-old Hong Kong driver, who was released unconditionally pending further investigations, reportedly told Customs officers he had bought the deer for $2,000 at a Shenzhen market and planned to eat it. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department - which is treating the deer's injuries - has taken over the case.
