WORLD LABORATORY ANIMAL LIBERATION WEEK

> April 20 - 28

>

> Fellow Activists,

>

> World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week (WLALW), April 20 - 28

> is rapidly approaching and the tens of millions of animals who are

currently

> imprisoned in laboratories are depending upon us to keep up the fight for

> their freedom.

>

> Every year activists across the United States come together in

> solidarity with the animals and each other to re-ignite the battle for

> animal liberation. This is the time when we must all come together for

the

> animals that suffer so severely in laboratories.

>

> It is absolutely vital that WLALW be a success this year.

> Continuing opposition to animal experimentation must again become a high

> priority for the animal protection movement. Why?

>

> Because a recent Stop Animal Exploitation NOW! audit of the National

> Institutes of Health (NIH) CRISP system has revealed that animal

> experimentation is increasing at an alarming rate.

>

> The NIH is currently (fiscal 2001) funding nearly 30,000

grants

> that support animal based experiments. This number represents an 18.3%

> increase over the last 5 years, and a 37.3% increase over the last ten

> years.

> The best estimate that we can devise indicates that the NIH is currently

> spending well over $8 billion a year on animal experimentation. Animal

> experimentation is increasing, and it is up to us to reverse this trend.

>

> Now, as never before, it is absolutely vital that the

> laboratories that are currently torturing and killing animals be exposed.

> The public must learn that millions of animals are suffering and dying

with

> virtually no legal protection. The legislators, whether state or federal,

> that support animal experimentation must be made aware that their

> constituents do not agree with their actions.

>

> Stop Animal Exploitation NOW! has launched a website

> http://www.all-creatures.org/wlalw/index.html to support activists in the

> effort to plan and coordinate events for WLALW. This website contains

> photographs of animal experimentation which are currently available

nowhere

> else, and these photos are downloadable for your use. Another part of the

> WLALW website contains informative articles about many aspects of animal

> experimentation to enable activists to educate themselves as effective

> spokespersons on the experimentation issue. The WLALW site also contains

a

> sampling of printable Fact Sheets (more will be added soon) that are also

> available for use by activists. The Resources section of the website

> connects you with tools for investigating laboratories in your area, as

well

> as links to other organizations that support World Week activities. The

How

> You Can Help section provides suggestions for event planning, and contact

> persons for help with both media relations and investigations.

>

> We are currently suggesting that in addition to focusing on

the

> cruelty of animal experimentation we should also utilize the financial

issue

> that is part and parcel of animal experimentation. The ongoing process

that

> squanders over $8 billion in federal tax dollars on animal experimentation

> every year is a scandal worthy of the most spectacular expose. Our

website

> contains (in The Escalating Cost of Animal Experimentation article) a list

> of laboratories that receive large amounts (often over $100 million

> annually) in NIH funding for animal experimentation.

>

> We are urging activists to organize protests at local laboratories with

NIH

> funded experiments. Colleges, universities, and private labs must all be

> shown that the tortures, which they routinely perpetrate on animals, are

> opposed by a militant and vocal movement.

>

> As a movement we must use WLALW to launch an effort to insure that federal

> funding for animal experimentation is drastically cut. The National

> Institutes of Health is currently the largest federal agency in the

funding

> of animal experimentation. Our goal is to make the NIH remove this

funding

> entirely. We will all benefit much more from drastic increases for the

> funding of clinical and epidemiological research coupled with non-animal

> technologies and substantial programs for the prevention of human disease.

>

> Whether you are assembling a protest for a laboratory near

you,

> a news conference to reveal the results of an investigation, or a simple

> tabling event, our website can help with many aspects of your endeavor.

>

> Please contact us to list your WLALW event on our website so

> that activists from across the nation can join in your efforts. If we can

> be of any help in coordinating your WLALW event please contact us

> immediately.

>

> Remember, you have a simple choice to make. Sitting at home

> won't change anything. If you want animal experimentation to end, you

must

> do something about it, yourself.
