Comment from sender: letters commending the Bayview Beach Resort for their initiative in setting up a 'cat cafe'can be emailed to: Mr. Edwin Yap, The General Manager, Bayview Beach Resort, Batu Feringhi Beach, 11100 Penang - email: bbrpen. This is the first hotel in Penang to establish a cat cafe as mooted by the Penang SPCA and it is hoped that all hotels in Penang will follow suit. Therefore letters to this hotel will also encourage other hotels in Penang to follow suit with the setting up of more cat cafes. However, there is one catch here – it is only open to cats. Touted as the first in the country, the cat cafe in the Bayview Beach Resort in Batu Ferringhi started operating late last month – thanks to the Penang Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). SPCA administrator Lily Leng said this was part of a “trap, neuter and release” programme which had been proven successful in several places such as San Francisco, Hong Kong, Bali and Vancouver. “In the programme, the cafe will be used to catch the cats to be neutered and vaccinated at our clinic before we release them back at the hotel. “Apart from controlling the cat population, this will create an animal-friendly environment in the hotel. Many guests, especially Caucasians, are animal lovers and don’t like to see hotel staff shooing the cats away,” she said in an interview yesterday. Leng said the society spent RM150 to vaccinate and neuter each cat while the hotel built the cafe hut and provided the meals. “It’s a win-win situation for the hotel industry and animal welfare organisations. Other hotels including Casuarina Hotel, Penang Parkroyal Resort and Holiday Inn are also keen to set up similar cafes,” she said, adding that the programme introduced by the World Society for the Protection of Animals might be extended to restaurants later. She also said if the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals could provide a mobile neuter clinic for the Penang branch, the programme could also set up dog cafes. Bayview Beach Resort executive assistant manager Ron Hasni Yusuff said two cats which had once pestered their guests and cooks for food were now the resort’s proud “resident guests.” “We are tired of having to dump them in nearby markets as they will miraculously find their way back here. So this cat care and control programme is the best solution for every one,” he added. He said the two cats, a male and a female, were fed rice and sardine or tuna. <!-- Page: 13 --> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
