Wombats belong in the wild in Australia, not in zoo jails! Pity this

ingeneous wombat

who broke out of its enclosure to experience a little freedom by pushing a

log against

the enclosure and leaping a metre to freedom. Pity the poor creature who is

now

under " lock and key " while his enclosure is made " escape proof " . This

unlucky wombat

will be just one of the many poor animals stared at by children taken to the

zoo jails to

stare at the prisoner animals in the school holidays as an " activity " .

Angry wombat attacks

**************************

The Sunday Times,

Western Australia

30/6/2002

A bad-tempered wombat attacked a groundsman and three visitors

after escaping from its enclosure at Perth Zoo on Thursday.

Four year old Zeus pushed a log against an enclosure wall and leapt a

metre to freedom.

In five minutes on the loose the angry animal bit a groundsman

and three visitors.

Perth Zoo spokeswoman Debbie Read said all the bites were minor,

but the wombat's victims were advised to get tetanus injections as a

precaution.

She described the attacks as " very unusual " .

" We have had male wombats in the enclosure for seven years and never had

an incident like this, " she said.

The wombat is being held under lock and key until the enclosure is made

Zeus-proof.
