Beagle Breeding Facility in China to Expand

by Karen Compt

An organization in China that produces animals for use in scientific

research recently announced plans to expand its beagle breeding facility

into the largest in the country during the coming year.

The Guangzhou Institute currently produces approximately 800 beagles

annually. After the expansion is complete, the number will increase to about

8,000.

The Institute plans to open a laboratory in which pharmaceutical research

will be conducted in the near future, but the expansion is primarily being

undertaken to meet foreign demand.

Members of a number of dog breeds are used in scientific research, but

beagles are most commonly employed because of the genetic purity of their

breed. It is so significant an advantage to researchers that the World

Health Organization has designated beagles as the best choice of dogs for

use in safety assessments of drugs, foods, chemicals and cosmetics.
