Berlin/Nairobi - January 2003 (WTN) - Rani and Kenia, two

female circus elephants, who had been captured from Africa,

became famous by having carried German politicians of the

outer-left party PDS during election campaigns in Germany.

 

After in June 2002, under very unclear circumstances, the

one elephant Rani had her leg broken at the German circus

Harlekin, she was - despite numerous protests - returned to

the circus after the operation, though her treatment had not

been completed.

 

But like always: After the elections everybody is forgotten -

also these elephants.

 

At the beginning of January 2003 veterinary experts discovered

the scandalous conditions the animals had to endure: In a former

pig farm in Goeritz (Saxonia-Anhalt/Germany) Rani was standing

in her own excrements and urine had already burned holes into

her soles. Due to her disability to stand, ropes had been put

around her chest to hold her upright, which cut deeply into her

skin. Furthermore a tumour the size of a football had formed in

her genitals. Despite immediate complaints, the responsible

veterinary authorities did not rescue Rani by confiscating

the animal and bringing her to the available veterinary facilities.

Therefore the condition of Rani worsened rapidly and she had

to be put down on 13 January 2003.

 

This scandalous development could have been prevented, since

the Safaripark Gaenserndorf in Austria, a safe heaven for animals

- usually rescued from zoos and circus ventures - had offered to

take the two circus elephants Rani and Kenia into their care, to pay

for their transport, to build appropriate accommodation and to nurse

Rani back to health. Some Austrian animal rights movements,

including FOR ANIMALS, were ready to support the rescue

financially. Unfortunately it was too late for Rani!

 

However, the elephant Kenia still lives under these shameful

conditions and must be confiscated straight away. Please help

to save her by writing an e-mail to the authorities demanding

the immediate transfer of Kenia to the rescue centre in Austria.

 

KENIA MUST BE SAVED - please help her!

After the dramatic events at the circus Harlekin, which ended

with the death of the elephant Rani, we appeal to you to have

the female Elefant KENIA immediately confiscated and

rescued from the mistreatment by circus manager Köllner.

Please authorise today the urgently necessary transfer to the

Austrian Park in Gaenserdorf for her safety and care.

 

It was only because of blatant neglect that the longtime companion

of Kenia, the female elephant Rani, had to endure such a terrible

situation until she had finally to be put down. Already the initial

injury of that elephant had been dubious because these animals

do not break a leg easily. But what happened after the operation

and her stay at the veterinary clinic can only be described as

extreme cruelty and negligence, because under proper care a

broken leg would not have had to lead to her death!

 

It is a shame for a civilized country like Germany to allow such to

happen and millions of people, also from the African country

Kenya - after which one of this elephants was named, are

expecting that you respond immediately and rescue KENIA

from a similar fate.

 

Since such negligence in keeping of elephants does not correspond

with international standards, we appeal to you to save the elephant

Kenia by confiscating her today and have her transferred to safety

at Gaenserndorf in Austria.

 

Please inform us accordingly and concerning all your decisions

and actions.
