Class action against activists proposed

A West Australian farm lobby group wants to pursue class action against

animal

liberationists who allegedly contaminated the feed of 70 thousand sheep

waiting

to be exported in Portland, Victoria.

The Pastoralists and Graziers Association wants the National Farmers'

Federation to make money available from the Fighting Fund to do so.

PGA President Barry Court says the legal action is necessary to protect

the

live trade, which injects billions of dollars a year into the national

economy.

Mr Court says he'll present his proposal to the NFF tomorrow and he

expects a

positive response.

" I know I have support from the Cattle Council, the Sheepmeats and

certainly

Victoria where the problem is, so I expect that an application for

Fighting

Fund money-fortunately Ian McLachlan the Chairman of the Fighting Fund

was in

Western Australia for the Australian Wool Innovations meeting on Friday,

and

with long talks to him indications are that the Fighting Fund there is

for an

issue like this, and from the meeting we had, which was attended by all

facets

of the industry, action will be taken. "

The NFF says it will consider the PGA's proposal at its executive

meeting

tomorrow.

" The Fighting Fund is a multi million dollar fund that is set aside to

run

legal cases that have national implications for agriculture. "

A religious holiday in the Middle East is slowing efforts to obtain a

written

guarantee that the 70 thousand sheep will be accepted for import in the

region.

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service says an export permit

will not

be issued until Australian exporters have a written guarantee the

animals will

be accepted overseas.

The live animal export industry body, Livecorp, says it's working with

the

Middle East importer, while the Federal Government is pursuing

diplomatic

channels.
