Animal rights law to be revised

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said yesterday that it would revise

laws related to animal protection, aiming at more extensive defense

measures.

The previous time the ministry moved for a revision, last year, was scuttled

by the demand from animal rights groups that the law stipulate that dogs

could not be killed for use as meat. The government had only proposed that

dogs destined for the dinner table be slaughtered in a less inhumane way.

The ministry plans to talk with animal protection activists next Thursday

and complete the revision process sometime next year after further

discussions with them.

The new animal protection law will categorize different types of animal

abuse and will strengthen punitive rules. At the same time, each city and

province across the country would be required to set up shelters for

abandoned animals.

Dear Linda:

Thank you for forwarding this article regarding better laws for the animals

in South Korea. I have been trying to help with this issue by sending letters

and circulating petitions, along with the help of " In Defense of Animals, " (an

animal rights organization which you may already know). I am very encouraged

by the news in the article and I hope everyone who has ready it is as well.

I truly hope that there will come a time when animals will stop suffering

terrible abuse.

Sincerely,

Patricia V.
