The Death of The Orang-utan “TOLE†in Malang Eastern Java.

Dear friend ;

To Whom It May Concern:

Since the early December last year, people feel suspicious over the death of

the endanger species after being confiscated from a private home. Police has

been asked to conduct an Investigation over the death of the Orang-utan and

how many endanger species have been died while being kept in PPS (Animal

Rescue Center)? Or in Wanariset Semboya?

November 2003, Profouna (NGO) and BKSDA Jatim II(Conservation for Nature

Resources Authority II) confiscated a 17th years old orang-utan and sent it

to Petung Sewu PPS ( Petung Sewu Animal rescue center) owned by Profouna and

founded by Gibbon Foundation.

Few weeks later (Early December 2003) , one of animals lover hear that his

orang-utan died in the Rescue center. He later bring lawsuit against the

Petung Sewu PPS and Gibbon foundation that sponsor the confiscated

operation. He and the animal welfare group also sued the management

authority for Nature conservation to the court and publish the incident to

the public.

From the hearing , it is not the first issue that the confiscated animals

died after being sent to the rescue center or rehabilitation center. Some

sources estimate of hundred of endanger species have been killed because of

the poor management of the center.

In 2001, six PPS (rescue centers) have been establish and founded by Gibbon

Foundation (Willie Smite). Many animals have been confiscated to the center.

But what make people distressed about is many of the confiscated animal died

in rescue center. Firstly the rescue center is not capable in keeping the

animal. Most of them have no experience and expertise about the animal.

Their target is how many animals that they can confiscate from private owner

annually, not how many can they rescue safely. They talking about the

quantities of animal being rescue, no matter its died or alive. Some of them

have been kept in the rescue center for years and the PPS does not know what

to do with them. However the more animals they keeps the more funding they

receive from Gibbon Foundation. The PPS has no record how many an imal being

sent or die in the center. There is no ethic and welfare management in the

center. Many PPS have no permanent veterinarian!. The Flora and Fauna

Conservation management, Department of Forestry has never investigated how

many confiscated animal have been died in the center?, How many animals have

been released to the wild? and how many of them survive in the wild after

being released?.

Since there are so many orang-utan being smuggle from the country, many

worry if there are linked to the rescue animals? Because until now no body

knows where is the rescue center get the funding from? How much money that

Gibbon Foundation receives from the donators? How much money that the Gibbon

Foundation spends for the rescue center? How much money the Gibbon

Foundation spends for the government official? How much money he spend for

the local police? Why the Department of Forestry is so close to the Gibbon

Foundation?…..etc.

We all aware that no private are allowed to keep endanger wildlife in their

home (according to the Indonesian Conservation law no 5 1990). Even there

are still many Indonesian and expatriates that keep endanger wildlife in

their home and some of them had been given permission by the authority to

keep the animal a long time ago.

The rescue operation should follow the rule/process of how to confiscate the

animal and must be done in transparency and professionally.
