Speaking at a seminar on 'Animal Welfare In India and USA' yesterday, Rajan said people had less concern for animals and fail to understand them. While highlighting the nature of abuse on animals by using them for sports, entertainment and experiment, she came down heavily on the animals used for food. She said US alone exports beef worth $100 billion to some of the countries such as Canada, Japan and Mexico. The cows were fed with meat bone meal (extracted from sheep) to increase their weight. This led to the spread of various diseases and people do not take much care, she said. Rajan also condemned the practice of animal sacrifice in temples and urged the government to make proper arrangements where stray animals were concerned. P S Mohan Kumar, assistant surgeon, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, USA, said that while taking up research on animals, they take the maximum steps to minimise the pain on animals and they also take post- surgical care. Also, before undertaking research, the person involved in it has to undergo various procedures as the US government gives much importance for animal care, he said. Dr P Thangaraju, Dean, Madras Veterinary College, and Dr A Mahalinga Nainar, director of Clinics - In -charge, Madras Veterinary College, also spoke. The seminar was organised by the Madras Pinjarapole Veterinary Hospital. Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Messenger. http://messenger./
