Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE) are protesting against Prime

Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's idea of bartering elephants for koalas.

On his weekly radio spot the prime minister said that from July 4 to

7 he would go to Australia, where he wanted to barter Thai elephants

for a koala.

" Koalas and pandas could make Chiang Mai a more famous tourist

attraction. Two kinds of bears will attract plenty of tourists, " said

Thaksin, apparently unaware that neither species is in fact a bear.

FAE Secretary-General Soraida Salwala said her foundation would

certainly write asking the prime minister to drop the idea.

She said elephants should live in forests and zoos were not suitable

for them.

" The prime minister should realise the importance of the Thai

elephant, whose numbers are continually declining, " she said.

She has already come out against Thaksin's proposal for an elephant

park.
