Guest guest
We've received the message below from the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Please e-mail Tony Blair asking him to ban hunting. If "click here" doesn't work, go to http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page854.asp The description of cubhunting is absolutely horrific, but it is also important to remember that thousands of hounds are put to death by hunts every year when they are considered no longer good enough for hunting. A ban on hunting with hounds would also abolish hare coursing and, as a greyhound protection group, we would particularly welcome this, not only because of the cruelty to and killing of hares caused by coursing, but also because of the injuries to greyhounds which occur and the fact that these dogs are not infrequently abandoned or killed when considered no longer good enough for coursing. A person who derives pleasure from watching a hare terrorised and/or torn apart by dogs, cannot be trusted to have compassion for any animal. For more info, go to http://ga.redblackandgreen.net/facts5.html In addition, the abandonment and killing of lurchers is a massive problem and the abolition of hunting with dogs would go a long way to solving this, as fewer lurchers would be bred if it were made illegal to use them to hunt other creatures. Tony Peters, Greyhound Action www.greyhoundaction.co.uk Cub hunting season begins The holiday season is here, but not for foxes. This month sees hunts across England and Wales targeting fox cubs to train young hounds and give them a taste for the kill. Usually in the early hours, huntsmen surround a small wood where a family of foxes is known to live, and the hounds are sent in to find and kill the cubs, urged on by hunters’ horns and cries. Underground earths are often blocked up to prevent the cubs escaping from the wood. Hounds that fail to show aptitude for killing may be shot. Up to 6,000 young foxes are likely to die during the season. We are currently powerless to prevent this savage killing of fox cubs. Yet,as long ago as 1999, Tony Blair promised that hunting would be banned. We want him to decide to bring the Hunting Bill back to the House of Commons. But time is running out. There are only a matter of weeks left for him to act and ensure that next year's foxes are not subjected to this violent and painful death.
