For far too long, the apathetic attitude of our authorities to prevent or reduce such degradation of our environment has only served to encourage the more selfish members of the populace to continue to abuse and damage our natural heritage. These are but two of the cases highlighted. All we have to do is look around us and we can see examples of such abuses daily. The indiscriminate dumping of rubbish, the uncontrolled clearing of hills and water catchment areas. The list goes on. Just take a cruise up the Straits of Malacca and you would not fail to notice the large, unsightly patches of rubbish (mainly plastic bags and polystyrene materials) floating in the sea off the mouths of the many waterways flowing from the Malaysian coast. Why are all these allowed to go on? At the national level, we have a ministry specifically tasked with protecting the environment and at every state level we have an executive councillor in charge of the environment. They should be proactive and have in place programmes and systems to monitor any potential damage to the environment and highlight these problems to the relevant enforcement agencies for corrective actions to be taken before more damage is done. They should not wait for the media to highlight the problem and the Sultan to reprimand them before they would act. I agree with the views of the Malaysian Nature Society that a holistic approach is needed. Apart from the policing and controlling of pollution, an integrated approach to address the polluting factors should be implemented. In addition, educating and even rewarding good environmental practice should be encouraged. MAH CHEE WAH, Johor Baru.
