Guest guest
http://www.an-group.org/x_paws.htm Plant and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) India ...in Kalyan – Dombivili, a huge suburb east of the city of Mumbai, in the district of Thane Five years back, the local animals were in the poorest of poor condition, dying on the roadside of maggot wounds or starvation. But on 11 January 2001, four young boys made the decision to put their feet down and voice the distress of the animals. So they created PAWS, the Plant and Animals Welfare Society that started with a vision. Ever since then, there has been no looking back. The society has fought many an adversity. Lack of funds and manpower being the most ravaging ones. Kalyan-Dombivili Municipal Corporation has stopped dog killings, but has done little to assist in the campaign to sterilize them. Our executive member Kishori Shete & Nevil Dand, Hiren Gala have done an excellent job of it: Picking up strays, getting them into hired trucks, taking them to Mumbai hospices to sterilize and vaccinate them and releasing them into their respective area. Members like Amit Sangoi, Nevil Dand, Kishori Shete, Sheetal Nagle, Anjali Ekbote and many others form the first aid group. Every night, after 10 in the evening and after the days work, they roam the roads on bikes to treat maggot wound animals and other sick animals. Some cases are referred back to the vets the next day. Innumerable homeless and abandoned animals have been re-homed through our adoption board. Adoption is done after strict interviews. Members regularly care for and rehabilitate disowned cattle - a major problem in the city - at Panjrapoles (Cattle shelters), after treating them at Bombay SPCA. Treatment is done at any time of the day or night. A large number of wild animals (lizards and snakes) has been rescued and released in the wild by PAWS members. PAWS feels that animal rights are as important as animal welfare, if not more. Many cases have been filed at police stations against animal cruelty by PAWS. PAWS also arranges different exhibitions, fund raising stalls and educative programmes. In October 2001, PAWS received its first ambulance as donation, only on the basis of the hard and genuine work that members of the organisation are putting in. This ambulance covers a wide area of the Thane district (the country's second largest District) and is the only one in the entire region. And all this was possible only because of the patronage of general public. We thank them whole heartedly and solicit their continuous support! Plant and Animals Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.)
