Guest guest
Dear Barbara, As far as I know the only systematic investigation into the fur trade in China was the HSI investigation in 1997: http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/issues_facing_wildlife/fur_and_trapping/betrayal_of\ _trust_the_global_trade_in_dog_and_cat_fur/index.html There is obviously a large fur farm industry but I have not seen any expose of it but I think one can safely presume that it is expanding and prospering - there are virtually no regulations on the trade and there is very little local opposition on the ethical plane. There is a good article in the Archives of Animal People: http://www.animalpeoplenews.org/04/11/chineseLiveMarkets11.04.htm There is nothing that I personally can do about this except wring my hands in horror. AAPN is only a website and electronic information exchange and has no resources in personnel or funds. We can only hope that one of the big international organisations will decide to take on this issue. Please could you approach them direct. John, Web Manager, AAPN. - " Barbara Ben Jemia " <benjemia <info Thursday, February 03, 2005 1:26 AM fur farms in china good evning! I'm writing you from switzerland. since yesterday in all newspapers and on tv they show pictures about the fur farms in china. I've never seen something like this, normal people start cryiing whatching this. if this farms need animals (foxes, dogs.....) for fur coats etc., why can they not kill animals in another way? it is more then discusting!!! what kind of people is this??? I'm a big fan from china, but each time I see something like this I think about changing my mind. I spent some money for the project with the moonbears and I was very happy when you answered to me. I think you make a great work! could you also do something for this animals on the fur farms in china? even if this is a business with the fur animals, it should be possible to kill this animals in a different way. I wish you succesful work and would be very happy about a short answer! all the best and kind regards, barbara
Guest guest
those articles brought tears to my eyes and made me utterly depressed. now that i will be very careful of the products i buy, could someone kindly help me distinguish the difference between real fur and faux fur? i am sad to say that i am not very good at distinguishing. but hopefully, someone will be able to shed light here. kind regards~ katrina
Guest guest
Katrina: It you put it to a flame, real fur sizzles and smells like burning hair. Synthetics will catch fire but tend to melt and smell like plastic. Certainly we would all prefer people to wear fake fur over real fur, and for that reason I'm not " campaigning " against fake fur, but real animal people should never wear or encourage the use of fake fur unless it looks so unrealistic that no one could possibly mistake it for the real thing. Promoting fake fur as an alternative to real fur has not worked as a strategy. What it has done has been 1) to perpetuate the notion that wearing animal skins is desirable, and 2) provide " cover " for real fur. If people don't know the difference, the wearer of real fur is not likely to be criticized (or if they are criticized, they may say their real fur is a fake). Cheap furs such as the dog and cat skins from China are sometimes themselves labeled " fake " or " ersatz " with the justification that they are not what they pretend to be -- meaning, one supposes, that they are pretending not to be domestic dog and cat fur.
