Guest guest
protect.adopt.donate. Edition 4. ©AHF 2005. “Man’s inhumanity to man is only surpassed by his cruelty to animals” From the editor’s desk With the mercury rising in this part of the world, things going on almost normal at the shelter, with extensive work happening at the new site. Coming to us as a whiff of fresh air was a national award our founder Rahul Sehgal won – The Venu Menon Animal Allies Award. It goes on to prove that persistence and perseverance can move mountains and can give thousands of deserving animals a better life. The Anti Cruelty Walkathon – Love is a four legged word Seeing the kind of cruelty cases we come across at the shelter, it makes one think all the difference just a little awareness could make. The apparent lack of sensitivity people exhibit towards animals – as if they are creatures not worthy of our love and affection makes one think why people cannot be a little more compassionate, a little more tolerant. To bring home the fact that animals are as much part of the ecology as humans, AHF has organised an Anti Cruelty Walkathon with ‘Love is a Four Legged Word’ as its theme. Slated to be a yearly affair, to be organised on the first Sunday of every March, the Walkathon has attracted people from all walks of life to be a part of this Walk. With over 2000 people participating in this Walkathon, this event will have the following institutions participating for a cause:- Sr. no. Name of the school 1 Tulip school 2 Mahatma Gandhi International 3 JG International School 4 Nalanda Vidhyalay 5 Mirambika school 6 Rachna school 7 Shreyas foundation 8 Balghar 9 Zydus school of excellence 10 Hiramani school Name of the special school 1 Samvedana (underprivileged children) 2 Blind Peoples Association 3 Manav Sadhna (slum children) 4 School For Deaf & Dumb 5 Snehprayas (Underprivileged children) Name of the college 1 Guj. National Law University 2 HL Commerce College 3 HA Commerce College 4 Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology 5 National Institute of Design 6 NIRMA Institute of Technology 7 Mudra Institute of Communication Ahmedabad 8 National Institute of Fashion Technology 9 DA-IICT 10 Indian Institute of Management 11 Rai University 12 Centre for Development Communication 13 Greenpeace 14 Ahmedabad Nature Lovers Association These institutions will be preparing themes on Anti Cruelty Issues like The Use of Plastics, Kite Flying and Animals in Circuses. Pet owners, Animal Lovers and our Dr. Dogs will also be participating in the Walkathon. Survivor of the month – Psoru / Appu Afflicted with distemper – a viral infection that is almost always fatal; Appu spent a month and a half in the Quarantine Section and is one of the very few dogs that have survived chorea. After a spate of infections and ongoing psoriasis, Psoru (as he was rechristened) is a delight to be with. Although he loves irritating Auto (the three legged black dog) and Frodo (the pig), he is a real softie at heart and loves snuggling up near people. Visitors of the month – A flamingo was brought to the shelter from the outskirts of the city. Re homed at the new shelter; Flame sits around comfortably with a night heron, an ibis, a lapwing, a combed duck - all victims of kite string injuries. Amma – A very old female macaque that was surrendered to AHF by her owner with the chain around her neck embedded in her flesh and all tissue necrosed. A two day old monkey (hanuman langur) Angad also came to us but failed to survive, due to aspiration. Other visitors that came in the shelter were two spotted owlets, a Rosy Starling, a green pigeon, a Sparrow hawk, a hoopoe, a Shikra, a banded kukri (snake) amongst others. Vulture reports–With glass coated strings playing havoc on vulture population, and a breeding pattern that is too slow, it is not really surprising that vultures face a real threat of extinction. Animal Help Foundation is the only shelter in Gujarat to have treated so many vultures, which is why our Vulture report and Bird Statistics has been submitted to various ornithological institutes for their data. The Venu Menon Animal Allies Award – The only animal related award in India, the Venu Menon Award recognizes people and institutions that have done commendable work in the field of Animal Welfare. This year, the Seventh Venu Menon Animal Allies Award was conferred on our founder Rahul Sehgal for the difference he tried and made for stray, ownerless animals in Ahmedabad. New website Our new website has a new avatar and a domain name – www.ahf.org.in. In our endeavour to reach out to as many people as possible, this website will be a much better representative of what we do at the shelter. Finally, Paradise found … With all the birds shifted to the new site, there have been absolutely no mortalities with raptors, poultry or even other birds. It is really heartening to see vultures spreading out their wings and basking in the sun in their new flight cages. Animal Birth Control (ABC) will start from the 7th of March and we hope to sterilize (spay/neuter) about 70% of Ahmedabad’s total stray dog population by 2007. Apart from ABC and Birds, Paradise will also have a Boarding Kennel for Pets, A Pet Crematorium, a Raptor Rehab Centre and an Urban Wildlife Rehab Centre including a monkey rescue and rehab centre. Dr. Dog This February there were two institutions that had Dr. Dog visits – Setu and Ratna Bhilwani’s Behavioural Clinic. With the kind of positive effect Dr. Dogs have on children, it is not surprising why children keep asking for Dr. Dog visits. People who have helped us … Intas Pharmaceuticals has agreed to be one of the sponsors for our Walkathon, as has Scientific remedies, Nabros Pharmaceuticals, Power H2O and Elan.
