eBay Live Animal Actions in China

Greetings.

At The San Francisco SPCA, we have been receiving many email

complaints about eBay allowing the auctioning of live domesticated

animals [mostly purebreds] on their eBay China website. China is the

only country where eBay allows the live animal auctions, as they say

it is " culturally acceptable " because " most " transactions end up with

people meeting face-to-face so the animals are not being shipped.

eBay is located just south of SF in San Jose, CA, so I guess people

are hoping The SF/SPCA can help find a solution. We would like to try.

As an animal welfare organization, we know that irresponsible

breeders and poor pet-owner matchmaking is a large contributor to

animals ending up in shelters. We work very hard to get that message

out and know that your organizations do too.

I am hoping someone there could tell us if they feel eBay's policiy

is contributing to pet-overpopulation and relinquishment in China.

Humanely yours,

karin jaffie

I storngly feel it is wrong for Ebay to allow this. Maybe we should all try

and email Ebay to put an end to this practice.

I checked some pet sellers on eBay China. They

delivered the animals all over the country by air or

bus. It's very dangerous for the baby pets to get

infected by virus or injured during the delivery.

That's really irresponsible for the lives.

I think media exposure of the disadvantages of buying

a pet from online will teach some buyers lessons and

world protest against eBay will help.

Hi Irene,

Do you think a wide spread puplicity campain in U.S. and Canada of

what e bay is doing in China, might cause them to think again about what they

are doing? It might also educate alot of people about what is going on w

domestic animals in China and maybe might shame ebay into conducting its

business more humanely? What do you think? Alot of people use ebay and alot of

them love their dogs. Silvia

Dear Silvia,

I agree with your suggestions. It will be better if

some ebay visitors voluntarily boycott the website for

a fixed period. I can provide you materials on pet

animals in China with photos of the abandoned cats and

dogs. Irene

Hi..

I've been following this thread, and although I'm not sure if Ebay

allows each country's ebay to have their own set of rules or not,

the policy of ebay is that NO LIVE ANIMALS CAN BE AUCTIONED.

Everytime I, or friends of mine, find live animals being auctioned

on ebay, we turn them in - and almost immediately, the auction is

removed.

This has always been ebay's policy to my knowledge.

Because of this policy, a new live animal auction service has sprung

up on the internet - animal welfare/rights groups are all over

them. :)

Hi Irene, If ebay doesnt allow live animal auctions how come it is happening in

China? Are there animal rights groups that can monitor the situation? Thanks for

the offers of the photos. If you would like to send them I could maybe use them

for future reference. I dont think my computer could handle to many, but a few

would be helpful. Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. Silvia
