Guest guest
Special training programme for zoo professionals By Prashant K. Nanda, Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, July 16 (IANS) Zoo personnel from across India will have to undergo a special training programme designed by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) on the scientific management of zoos. The aim of the programme is to increase their knowledge on zoo designing, policies, animal nutrition, research updates and conservation issues. A 15-day refresher programme for middle-level officials will be conducted at Chandigarh in November by the CZA and the Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India. " We have been training zoo personnel but this is a special programme on the scientific management of zoos, " said CZA member secretary B.R. Sharma. " Issues like animal nutrition, latest animal care techniques, conservation updates and better dealing with visitors will be addressed in the programme, " Sharma told IANS. A similar training programme for zoo veterinarians will also be conducted. With better knowledge of animals and different facets of their upkeep, CZA is hopeful of attracting more visitors to the 164 zoos across the country. For directors and supervisors of zoos, the medium of training will be English whereas for zookeepers, it will be in regional languages. The authorities have already trained 714 zookeepers by conducting five training camps across the country.
