August 2nd 2005 - French animalfriends are calling for a halt against

the use of live dogs as bait for sharks.

Not only dogs, but also cats are already for a long time used on the

French island Réunion as bait, in spite of which this is forbidden.

A petition actionalert has been started in the hope there will come an

end to this tradition.

Before the dogs attached to fishinggear are thrown in the water, the

fishermen beat hooks through nose and paws.

In spite of the fact that this practice is for a long time used, blazed

indignation last week end just well on.

A boy took place at the region Sainte-Marie and found a dog that was

prepared as bait.

He saved the animal from the hooks and brought it to a veterinary

surgeon.

The family of the boy wants to adopt the dog now.

On the island, which lies in the Indian ocean, the French legislation

prohibits the use of the animals as bait.

He who is caught can get two years prison.

The chance however is very small, because fishermen must be caught

red-handed and proof is often lacked afterwards.
