EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: An animal lover holding a puppy in memory of the homeless animals that had to be euthanised SPCA animal inspector Sabrina Yeap said the veterinarians at the centre in Ampang Jaya had to resort to this, mainly because of lack of space for the animals. “We receive some 1,000 cats and dogs every month, and the limited space in our centre makes it very difficult for us to keep all the animals,” she said. “It’s a nightmare whenever we have to do it because of space constraints. The public can help us save the animals by neutering or spaying their pets to avoid them being killed when they overpopulate.” Yeap said that Malaysians’ awareness on the neutering and spaying of pets is still low. She added that apart from being able to control the animals population, the inexpensive procedure can also reduce the animals risk of developing sexual diseases. “Not to mention curbing the males from marking their territory by urinating and fighting over females. It can also reduce the risk of growing tumours in the reproductive systems, so they grow healthier compared to those that were not neutered or spayed,” said Yeap. She advised those looking for pets to come to animal shelters instead of pet shops whenever they want to get a cat or a dog. In a simple ceremony yesterday, SPCA and animal lovers joined together and lit candles in commemoration of the animals that had to be killed due to overpopulation. It was held at the South City Plaza here in conjunction of the International Homeless Animals Day. There was a donation drive and information on pet care for the public at the ceremony. SPCA committee members Loke Poh Lin and Au Eching, veterinarian Dr George Abraham and animal lover Jacqueline Tsang also spoke on animal rescue and the importance of controlling the population through neutering and spaying.
