Guest guest
Dear Azam, Without detracting from the achievements of the people of Mumbai and the Indian authorities in coping with the monsoon floods, the difference between Mumbai and New Orlelans was that the flooding in New Orlelans was caused by the sea wall (the levee) breaking and a surge of the sea, not rain. I appreciate how difficult things can be in Mumbai during the monsson, as I have been there during monsoon several times. Guest guest
Dear Azam, I am convinced that Mr. Vilas Rao Deshmuk cannot be blamed for the problems following the flooding in Mumbai. There were several lacunae in planning and execution of disaster relief work and 37 inches of rain in 24 hours can be best described as an act of God. However, it is indisputable that he and his officials could and should have been more visible in problem areas following the rains. Coming to your comparison between what happened in Bombay and New Orleans (and I know this was not your original statements since I received this e-mail from several sources), please note that a category 5 hurricane and rain, no matter how heavy, are two totally different conditions. New Orleans was a tragedy waiting to happen and many had warned of this for many years. Mumbai would have been far less severe if simple things like banning of thin plastic had been in force. The major and only real difference is that there was no looting and similar problems. Indians are a more stoic people. S.
