Guest guest
http://www.thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=18 & theme= & usrsess=1 & id=91545 Caring for animals Tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, away from the hustle-bustle and noise of the thoroughfare on Dr. N G Saha Road in Behala, is a hospital which the local residents have named Jagannathpur Charitable Animal Hospital. ‘Love N Care for Animals’ is a non-Governmental charitable organisation which came into existence eight years ago on 7 July, 1997 for alleviation of the suffering of stray and distressed animals in the city and its surroundings. Here is what Ms. Sushmita Ray, voluntary executive of the organisation, had to say. ‘Love N Care for Animals’ takes care of stray animals in distress. They give these animals a shelter, a loving home, tend to their needs, treat their ailments. The horses that roam about on the Maidan and the cows grazing on the pastures do not have a home, unlike the other animals in the city. In addition to rendering the services of a hospital, this organisation is deeply concerned about the welfare of animals in the city. This age of technology, with its pollution and increasing industrialisation threaten the very existence of birds and beasts. Natural habitats are fast disappearing. Man will stand to lose one of his greatest friends, if he continues to sojourn along that path, paying no heed to the needs of his friends — animals. This is the message that the organisation is trying to spread. Being genuine animal lovers, they are trying to promote awareness in the city chiefly among school students. They have conducted free workshops in several schools, have interacted with the Nature Clubs and have spoken to students. This year the organisation started a Plantation Programme in collaboration with the State Forest Department — West Bengal and Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Don Bosco Park Circus was also involved in that project. The noble endeavours of ‘Love N Care for Animals’ can only be fruitful if the people of the city wake up to the cries and calls of animals who need to be loved and cared for.
