I have just returned from spending 2 weeks in India.

Whilst in India I visited the Help in Suffering Sanctuary which is run by 2

close friends of mine. In fact I ran the Australian office of HIS from 89-96.

Christine Townend also started the Animal Liberation movement in Australia.

The visit to the sanctuary was one of the highlights of the trip.

At the sanctuary they were treating elephants, camels, horses, donkeys, goats,

sheep, dogs, cows, cats and the night before our visit treated a wild languar.

The Townends have kept very accurate records right from the start and have

approached the street dog campaign and the rabies vaccination program in a very

methodical way which I think is part of their success. The lastest count

indicates the street dog population in Jaipur has gone down by 27%.

I was impressed and moved by the dedication of the Townends and all the vets

that work at the sanctuary. The night before we visited the sanctuary we took

all the vets out to dinner so we were able to discuss their work with them and

they all seem to be happy to be working in an environment where they are truely

helping animals.

We had a driver take us around Jaipur. He was a man of few words but after

visiting the sanctuary he smiled at us and said " very nice place " .

It is pleasing to see some successes.
