Narayan Mahanta, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) speaking to northeasttribune.com after the death of the animal said that the increasing human encroachment in the hilly areas is one of the reasons for the death of the animal. " Due to the narrowing down of space in the forest following the encroachments, the animals are left with very congested area to roam which ultimately leads to a duel for reasons like sharing of food " , informed Mahanta. " If things are not addressed now then there would be a rise in such incidents in the city and the other hilly areas in the outskirts " , speculated Mahanta. According to the residents of Maligaon's Debkata Nagar, the two leopards indulged in a fight in the wee hours of the day and in the process one of them bite the other in the neck due to which the neck vein was affected leading to its death. " The post mortem report also revealed that the main reason for the animal's death was the neck injury though bite marks were found in other parts of the body too " , the DFO informed. The forest department later on buried the animal after undergoing the post mortem.
