Guest guest
y work requires me to track a lot of information. I found a program on the web to help me. It's something like the " card file " program that came with Windows 3.1 but disappeared in Windows 95. The program is called " Vault " and it is much more powerful. It helps you organize any information in an outline form. I use an old version of the program but I see there is a newer version. You can download it and read about it at:

http://users.aol.com/ericb98398/index.html

So why am I telling you this? Well besides my work and personal information I decided to save my raw food recipes in Vault. (You can have just 1 vault file, or several vault files). I created a Vault file to hold just my recipes. I know what I have in the frig to eat but I find it a nusiance to hunt through all my recipe books to find a recipe to use. I usually get tired of looking and do anything. Well with Vault it is really easy. Please go to the Vault site and read up on how to use it because I'm only going to be brief here. On the left side (outline) of the Vault screen I added the name of the recipe book. Under that I entered the catagory (desserts, salads, etc). Under each catagory I entered the name of the recipe. When that recipe name is highlighted on the left I can then type the ingredients on the right side along with the page number. Fortunately I type fast. I don't put in the whole recipe... I just enter the ingredients like this:

---------------------
p 130

cucumber
mung bean sprouts
bok choy
tahini
lemon
red pepper
red onion
braggs
-------------------

I do this for all the recipes. Now when I want to know a recipe for mung bean sprouts I can do a search in my Recipe Vault file for " mung bean sprouts " and instantly up will pop all the recipe names that contain the words " mung bean sprouts. I can then easily see that it is a salad and which cookbook it is in and on which page. I can review the ingredients quickly on the Vault screen (on the right side) by clicking on the recipe name. If I have most of the ingredients I refer to the book and page. I have then found my meal! And it only takes a matter of seconds once you learn how to use Vault.

I highly recommend it. It's not a recipe database program... it can be set up to hold any kind of text information. It's fast and it works. You can also cut and paste text information from the web and put it in a Vault file... very nice! So give it a try because it is shareware (try it before you buy it). I see the price is $20. but if you like it as much as I do you will see that it is a bargain. My pointer is for the Windows 95 version but I see there is also a Windows 3.1 version available for $15. Remember you don't have to pay for it until you give it a try and decide that you want to keep it.

If you think you have a better computer program to hold recipes please share it with us.

-OrionsDad
