Guest guest
Can anyone tell me if they know whether brazil nuts are normally raw when you buy them? I love to eat them, on and off. The package simply says " shelled brazil nuts " And if anyone says to sprout them, then please tell me how long to soak and are they good that way?

Thanks,
Guest guest
I would soak them for 12-24 hours, and then rinse and drain them a couple times for two days. I've just had them when they were soaked and rinsed after 12-24 hrs and they were great. I still prefer almonds and walnuts though.
Guest guest
Agreed. Soak them.

See if you can find them unshelled. I'm fortunate to have an oriental market nearby that sells several different nuts still in their shells and in bulk. I buy about 1/2 pound of each and just crack them before soaking and consuming.

-OrionDad
Guest guest
OrionsDad,

Is there something nasty that is done or used to shell brazil nuts? Or is it just the freshness issue?

I haven't shelled them myself since I was a kid, but my foggy recollection is that they're difficult to shell. Is my recollection wrong?

Glad to see you back. You need to discipline your adopted son Shortus. He's being mean. ;-)
Guest guest
Nothing wrong with the shelling process of brazil nuts. It's the freshness issue. It's just best to eat the nuts recently shelled. The shells are the best design yet to keep the nuts fresh.

The brazil nuts are about the same to crack as any other nut using just a regular nut cracker. It's the macadamia nut that is hard to crack. I've already broken one set of vise grips doing it.

Thanks, it's great to be back. Should I delete Shortus from the club? :-)
