Guest guest
I took a course in nutrition in college about 8 years ago and the instructor was very overweight and didn't look to be all that healthy. She said meat was good for us and even said she likes fast food. We butted heads more times than I could count and I finally dropped the class.

I hope your experience is a postiive one, Blake! (I think it's Blake who's taking the course). Even if they teach what you know is false, stick with it and get your degree or certificate. That way you can get a job as a registered dietician or nutritionist and do things YOUR way. I kind of wish I had stuck with it but it was too frustrating for me at the time. If I had gotten a degree or certificate, I'd probably be working at a school, hospital or retirement home and hopefully.... HOPEFULLY change the way those people are fed or at least get the ball rolling in the right direction.

Good luck to you and keep us posted! Guest guest
As a registered dietician or nutritionist CAN you do things YOUR way? I really don't know the answer.

Doctors are put under great peer pressure with the threat of license removal if they stray from accepted AMA practices. Perhaps in a private practice a nutritionist could alter the traditional food pyramid. It really would be great to have an “enlightened” nutritionist create new menus for schools and hospitals. You might be the FIRST Blake!

Then again... if you get rid of all the soda, hot dogs, french fries, candy and coffee from the hospital what are the doctors and nurses going to eat? :^ & gt;

-OrionsDad
Guest guest
My hats of to blake. His efforts are commendable and we need a whole lot more RD's like him. He is not the first, nor will he be the last. I am also an Registered Dietitian, Liscensed Dietitian, Liscensed Nutritionist. We have alot more lee-way in what we can say and do then do doctors, as we dont hurt people the way MDs can. I worked in a hopsital and taught nutrition to MDs and we were able to change not only the whole hospital menu but also the MDs who came to the nutrition classes were served 100% vegan food (not 100% raw, but you got to start somewhere), Another friend of mine is working with the school systems around the country and is implementing vegan food programs that meet all the Fed guidelines. The program is in about 50 schools right now. There are many other RDs and PhDs in nutrition doing some really great work. You will make it thru the classes. Most of the nutritionists and RDs in this land are a joke. I think they are an enbarrassement. But that doesnt mean that you have to be. Most MDs are an embarrasement, but Dr McDougall was able to go and be a great MD. SO have others like Dr Cousins, and Dr Bernard (PCRM)and Dr Campbell etc. IN fact, this is to your advantage. It will be easy for you to stand out, cause none of the other RDs really know anything. this negative is really a postive. In particular, I am sure that you like me, would hate any of the traditioanl roles of a RD, like working in a hosptial. But these days, RDs are everywhere, working with MDs in private practice, being in private practice them selves, working in Spas, resorts, fitness clubs, etc etc. Its really up to you.

If you are willing to be a shining example of healthy and you can learn not to try and shove the raw food vegan message down everyone's throat, and also try to learn that not everyone out there who isn't a raw fooder is your enemy and a bad guy, and learn that not all other healthcare professionals are bad people, then you will be very successful and in demand cause there are so few who really know how to live healthfully. You just have to learn a little tolerance, acceptance and compassion to the other views and not think yours is the only right one. But then again, don't we all? Guest guest
Dear OrionsDad,

Already the traditional food pyramid has been altered in this part of the world to take account of new knowledge. It's likely this will continue.

It's a false dichotomy to set up the enlightened us and the benighted them. We are all learning and changing.

Cults typically set up an enlightened us.

Fish didn't discover water, and so it is very easy to be blind to one's own culture.

I think that the raw food movement does have some aspects of cult. And in particular an American cult.

America is the home of cults, quite like India. It seems quite natural to you, but is the product of just another culture. Yes, America is just another country. In India they burn their wives to death, in America, you shoot each other, for the highest motives, in each case.

The benefits and costs of raw fruit and vegetables are being discovered by a global audience. An audience that is not turned on by an American cult.

It is unlikely there is an apocolyse coming, so many more of us will discover the pains and pleasures of eating raw.

Victor.

Victor. Guest guest
Before Dr. McDougall became famous he lived and practiced on Ohau, Hawaii, he was briefly my doctor. He is the reason I became vegan.

There is a picture of me on the internet!! (now I'm famous) I am in the low right hand corner of the picture wearing levis, white shoes, black T shirt, Black cap. I am standing on a black sand beach, which is also a NUDE beach (don't look to close) after an O.C.1 outrigger conoe race.

http://www.y2kanu.com/images/hipa2001/kamaili/unclad.jpg

I hope this link works.

Doug
