Hi everyone

Thanks for the responses regarding storing green leafy

vegetables.

I have a question regarding raw diet. I read in a few

articles that women who eat raw vegetarian diet might

experience irregular/missing periods.

Acc to one article, it mentioned that menstrual

bleeding is an unwanted body mechanism and when one

sticks to raw diet, periods might diappear/be missed.

Has anyone experience this phenomenon?

I apologize if this is too private a question to be

posted on a mailing list.

If so, I would appreciate getting your replies to my

email address " gayu_pwc " privately.

Thanks

Gayathri

Gayathri; yes if you are doing it right you will stop menstruating.

This has come up before I don't remember the post number, but at the

time I copied an excerpt from the book " Survival into the 21st

Century " by Viktoras Kulvinskas; titled " The Biological Superiority

of Woman " that deals with this issue.

I just emailed it to you. Its quite long 12 pages. Let me know (in a

board post) if you get it as I am having trouble with my email. If

any one else wants to read it, let me know. I'll push the button.

Gayathri; if this has happened to you; congratulations. This is what

should happen.

Hi Doug

I didn't get the 12 pages draft .

I thought periods are part of nature and this concept

seems to be defying nature.

I would like to read through the document to see the

explanation for this happening.

Thanks a lot

Ann Nutr Metab 1999;43(2):69-79

Consequences of a long-term raw food diet on body weight and

menstruation: results of a questionnaire survey.

Koebnick C, Strassner C, Hoffmann I, Leitzmann C.

Institute of Nutritional Science Justus Liebig University of Giessen,

Germany. Corinna.Koebnick

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between the strictness of long-

term raw food diets and body weight loss, underweight and amenorrhea.

METHODS: In a cross-sectional study 216 men and 297 women consuming

long-term raw food diets (3.7 years; SE 0.25) of different

intensities completed a specially developed questionnaire.

Participants were divided into 5 groups according to the amount of

raw food in their diet (70-79, 80-89, 90-94, 95-99 and 100%). A

multiple linear regression model (n = 513) was used to evaluate the

relationship between body weight and the amount of raw food consumed.

Odds of underweight were determined by a multinomial logit model.

RESULTS: From the beginning of the dietary regimen an average weight

loss of 9.9 kg (SE 0.4) for men and 12 kg (SE 0.6) for women was

observed. Body mass index (BMI) was below the normal weight range

(<18.5 kg/m(2)) in 14.7% of male and 25.0% of female subjects and was

negatively related to the amount of raw food consumed and the

duration of the raw food diet. About 30% of the women under 45 years

of age had partial to complete amenorrhea; subjects eating high

amounts of raw food (>90%) were affected more frequently than

moderate raw food dieters. CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of a raw food

diet is associated with a high loss of body weight. Since many raw

food dieters exhibited underweight and amenorrhea, a very strict raw

food diet cannot be recommended on a long-term basis.

Hi All,

This is interesting but we have to look at a number of different factors that

aren't included in this study or at least this page. This study is saying that

we lose too much weight from raw diet and it causes us to stop menstruating due

to a drop in body fat. Are these subjects eating enought fats? If so, what

type-nuts, oils, avocado? Are they eating enought protein rich raw foods like

alfalfa sprouts, avocado, nuts, etc? There are so many factors that can adjust

the results of this study. Body fat can be contolled based on these things.

Women should not lose their menstruation completely, but I know once the body is

detoxified from the raw diet and the hormones become balanced, menstruation

should be a breeze-symptonless and light.

I also use a natural progesterone cream which is quite amazing at assisting with

a symptomless mense.

I have not received this article - haven't asked for it yet ....

but are you sure bleeding is a normal process - I really have had trouble

all of my life imagining women running through the woods or foraging on the

plains or swinging through the trees bleeding a pint a day for a week - can

you imagine the trail of carnivores that would be following you ? I suspect

that if we lived the life we are supposed to be we would not bleed at all -

it makes no sense to.

I just sent it to you Hollie its a good read. I would like to just

post it on the board but its huge. If any of you guys want it let me

know I know we don't have the problem but its very interisting and

once again shows how different life on raw foods can become, and how

physiologicly different from cooked food eaters we are.

Hi there,

Sorry to jump into this when the conversation's already over, but I

wanted to add that I heard recently that women in Asia, a country

which is starting to take on the SAD but not completely yet, stop

menstruating at a much younger age than American women. Their diet

isn't raw, but does consist of more whole, less processed foods like

vegetables, grains, fruit and fish mostly, so it's closer to raw than

SAD is. I think the report said that part of it could be the hormones

in red meat making American women menstruate unnaturally.

Hope this is of interest!

Hi Gayathri,

Actually body fat - and menstruation are all tied

together. I am a personal trainer and know from

experience that those athletic women whose body fat

gets low low, stop their menses.

My posting the same day as yours was an attempt to ask

those who have been on all raw foods if they find

maintaining adequate body fat challenging, So is it

folks?

Regarding menses, I have been vegetarian for 25 years

and now near vegan for another 25 - so 50 years of

veggie living and much raw food. I stopped my menses

at 42 and the Dr. told me that was 'early' for

menopause. I never thought to ask my deceased Mother

when she stopped. Most gynecologists say we follow

our Mothers patterns, I presume they also figure we

follow their diet patterns. My Mother became veggie

at about age 30 due to extreme health problems. So

who knows? I was about 9 when she was smart enough to

give me the choice to follow the lecturers (like Paul

Bragg) that we were going to and I did.

Good health to you,

Roberta
