Guest guest
Hi: I'm a vegan who is wanting to try the raw foods regime. I think I could live on fruits and vegetables and sprouts if I tried, but it's all new to me, so I'm doing research about it. Right now, I have quite a lot of flax seed in my kitchen, and don't know what to do with it. Can I soax it, and make crackers or something? I have a coffee grinder, a blender, and a food processor... Help appreciated, Connie

The seed contains 30 - 40% oil, which comprises mainly linoleic and linolenic acids. The seed also contains cyanogenic glycosides (prussic acid). In small quantities these glycosides stimulate respiration and improve digestion, but in excess can cause respiratory failure and death. Cultivars low in these glycosides have been developed and large quantities of the seed would need to be eaten to achieve a harmful dose. And from http://www.coconut-info.com/facts_on_flax.htm Flaxseed meal can be added to any baked or cook dish—breads, muffins, pancakes, casseroles, etc. You should not eat it raw! Raw flaxseed contains a toxin called thio-cyanate—a cyanide-like compound. This toxin can be found in the blood after eating raw flaxseed. Cooking neutralizes this compound, making it harmless. Guest guest
Hi Connie: I grind it to powder in a coffee grinder and use approx. a tblspn per day on anything. Guest guest
Connie I'd just sprinkle a bit over the salad from time to time. The required reading for the whole subject of raw foodism is David Wolfe's Sun Food Success System. Guest guest
Hi Connie, I make all kinds of fun things with flax including crackers. Soak it then spread it out and dehydrate it. You can season it with kelp or any other seasonings of your choice. Youcan also add other seeds to make it more exciting. I also make the greatest smoothies with it in the mornnings. I put it in with my fruits and young coconut. Once you have the crackers, you can break it up to smaller pieces for salad topping it's great and crunchy. love T Connie Sunday <scsigurl2002 wrote:Hi: I'm a vegan who is wanting to try the raw foods regime. Guest guest
Wow, thanks bearscats, that is good to know. At least now I have an excuse for not putting it on my salads after being soaked, when it is all slimy. Susi
