Champion juicers are very versatile, but tend to heat foods,

especially more fibrous ones like greens.

I have a Green Star purchased in August(?). It tends to not heat

foods and has made a fairly easy job of juicing greens. The only

problem i have had is that one of the parts has been cracking. The

company has since replaced it. After I had ordered it, I received an

email mentioning cracking. I don't know how common it is. I like the

juicer otherwise, I just want it to last.

I've heard the Samson juicer may be good, but haven't heard that much

and have never used it.

I have used a champion for 10 years, more heavily in the earlier years -

they do hold up, but, as Jeff pointed out, do also heat the juice a bit, and

also, don't do greens as well as harder vegetables/fruits. One can make

nutbutters with them by adding oil, but it is messy. Does make good banana

ice cream, also good for making dough out of wheat/barley sprouts.

Got a GreenLife a couple of years ago, it doesn't heat the produce up like

the champion, and has a bit more yield per produce input. It does wheatgrass

reasonably well, unlike the champion (which the makers claim will do

wheatgrass while adding water in process, not my idea of a being wheatgrass

juicable). I was rather disappointed with the GreenLife when I wanted to

make a bunch of apple juice on a few occassions - after about a glass or so

worth of juice, I had to stop the machine, and clear out all the messy pulp,

which kinda bummed me out given the price (I paid like $360 for it). The

juice sometimes also can have a good deal of foam in it, though I still deem

the quality of the juice to be better (i.e. it comes out colder and seems to

stay a bit longer in refrigerator) than the Champion.

Leaving both my Champion and GreenLife in my Atlanta condo, I've been

staying here in Seattle indefinitely, and decided to buy an Omega 8001 just

to try as a comparison, as much as I could apart from the others. So far, I

am somewhat impressed with it compared to the GL - was able to juice pounds

of the jonagold apples to make quarts of apple juice for myself and others

without ever having to stop the unit - it didn't clog like the GreenLife,

and the foam produced was much less. It does a pretty good job with

wheatgrass and greens, and also seems to homonogize as about as well as the

Champion or GL. It is a bit easier for me to clean than the GL, as one

doesn't have to worry about cleaning the part where the juicer apparatus

attaches to the motor/shaft, which is a pain with the GL, though it still is

a chore for all three to get the screens clean after hard vegetables/fruits.

I haven't tried nut butters with either the GL or the Omega, so can't

compare. Nomi Shannon, of Raw Gourmet fame, apparently says that the Omega

doesn't produce as much juice as the GL per input of produce - have to take

her word, cause I haven't had em side by side.

I was able to get the Omega 8001 for $219 including shipping through some

internet offer - can't seem to find the company offering it at this price,

will check again tomorow if anyone is interested. Don't know how long this

thing will hold out, but it does have a 5 year warantee, FWIW.

As far as dehydrators, I'm kinda sold on Excalibers, have a 9 tray in

Atlanta, and a 5 tray here for my indefinite stay, they work well for me...

Take a look at

www.discountjuicers.com and

especially

http://www.discountjuicers.com

/compare.html for a great

comparison of types of juicers

and brands. I have the Omega

8001 Nutrition Center and love

it. My first juicer was also

an Omega but the centrifuge

model. It's about 15 years

old now and still going strong

(We still use it in our

motorhome). It does everything

the Green Star can do and is

considerably less costly. I

bought mine locally as I don't

care for discountjuicers'

return policy.

We're raw foodists so our

Omega 8001 is used daily for

juicing and frozen desserts.

Another good place to check on prices for juicers/dehydrators is

http://gulfcoastjuicers.com/ They discount most of their prices (the

actual, discounted price doesn't show up until you click on 'add to cart'

but you can easily empty your cart again) and their prices include shipping.

I got my Green Star 3000 from them and was very pleased with both the price

and the service.

Here is what Naiomi Shannon has to say; The Green Star 1000 This is the juicer that I recommend as it is a big savings over the GS 3000 which has a lot of attachments you will never use. However, normally the GS 1000 has the fine filter only. The one I sell has both the fine filter and the coarse filter. This will allow you more choice in type of juice that you make. The coarse filter normally costs about an extra $30.00. Why do I only offer the Green Star? After all there are tons of other juicers on the market. I test all the products personally. I tested the Samson, which also has several other names-- Oscar, Omega 8001, and even though it sells for one hundred dollars less-the reason I don't, can't recommend it is because when I juiced the exact same amount of produce in the Samson and in the GS-the yield was twice as much in the GS. I got 2 cups of juice with the GS as opposed to 1 cup with the Samson with the identical amount of produce. I could not believe my eyes. It won't take very long before the initial savings are eaten up, literally, by all the additional produce you will have to buy. I also still sell the trusty Champion juicer. Still a great product at only 199. This is good for people who are just plain never going to spend $400 on a juicer. True, the quality of the juice isn't as high, it won't last as long (the juice not the machine, the machine is also a workhorse). But you can do everything with a Champion that you can with a GS-juice, ice creams, homogenize. Until the Green Life/Green Star came along the only good juicers were the Champion and the very very expensive Norwalk Press. Now, you have a high quality juice as good as or close to it as the Norwalk without spending 2500 dollars-that is the Green Star. But, honestly, the Champion, while not as good as the GS is still a very terrific machine. I offer a service. When you are confronted with all the choices there are, short of testing them all, how do you make your decision? That is what I do for you. Everything I sell, I sell because I believe in the product. I can personally recommend it as the best on the market. That is why I switched from selling the Vita Mix to the K-Tec, because the K-Tec is a superior machine. Same with the Green Star 1000, it is the best machine on the market at this time. I have put together the perfect combination of items, adding in the additional filter to make it just right for all raw fooders and others who make juice. So, don't forget, if you are comparison shopping, I have seen the GS 1000 for around 370. But that does not include the coarse filter, mine does. For $375, I am offering the Green Star 1000 for this terrific price up until the week before Christmas. (subject to change however, if my dealer changes their price). To order the GS 1000, please call us at 888-316-4611. Cisca takes the calls in person Mon-Fri from 12-5 EST. If you get a Voice Mail, she will get right back to you, it could be that her baby daughter Ella needs her attention. The special price for the mandoline plus and the saladacco for $65.00 ENDS November 1, so please get your order in before that. regards, joyce - Jeff Rogers Tuesday, November 12, 2002 10:05 PM RawSeattle Re: [RawSeattle] juicers\dehydrators Champion juicers are very versatile, but tend to heat foods, especially more fibrous ones like greens.I have a Green Star purchased in August(?). Thanks Joyce, David and Jeff for your info on juicers and

dehydrators, I have went ahead and purchased an Excalibur 9-tray,

that seems to be the consensus on dehydrators. I found it for about

$153 and free shipping, I ordered some teflex sheets too for about $6

each. Seems to be the best prices out there. I am holding out on the

juicer for now, the old juiceman will have to hold out for a bit

longer.

Thanks again

Monte
