Guest guest
Hi Nicki, I have some recommendations for you. I agree with you there is plenty of unscientific and unsound advice out there when it comes to a raw food diet. I believe there is the standard raw food diet and then a healthy raw food diet. Many raw foodists run into all sorts of problems because they are getting conflicting advice. I recommend the book, " Raw Secrets, " by Frederic Patenaude. He was a disciple of David Wolfe and even worked with him. David Wolfe has said that he personally eats and thrives on 80% of his calories from raw fat. I don't ever think he could do very well athletically if he truly were to maintain that high of a fat concentration. Eventually Frederic discovered that eating the raw diet as per Wolfe's recommendations was not working for him. He went back temporarily to eating cooked food. Then he rediscovered Natural Hygiene. Natural Hygiene is less popular because it seems to be more restrictive. Yet this is the way that is closest to what we would do if we were out in nature. It also has had extensive scientific study to back up many of it's principles. Personally, I've tried many different approaches to eating raw and I continually fine-tune my diet for Peak Performance. Raw Secrets is a great book along these lines because you learn about the many pitfalls that raw foodists make. Hopefully you'll realize the truth in the book and follow that advice. I have a link to that book and the fantastic magazine " Just Eat an Apple. " Their latest issue is tremendous. It is a must read. Almost all the articles are super informative and taught me some new things. It is a great issue if you want to introduce someone to the raw food diet. It's the issue with the Blood Type Diet article. This issue is a must read. It may blow away a lot of your old ideas and misconceptions about the raw food diet. To see more about the book and magazine just click this link. http://www.mcssl.com/app/aftrack.asp?afid=74580 I also have the utmost respect for Dr. Douglas Graham and Prof. Rozalind Gruben. They have an intense scientific background. A good book from Dr. Graham is called " Nutrition and Athletic Performance. " Don't worry it isn't just about sports. It's good for anyone wanting a raw diet. Seeing them in person is even better. To see Dr. Graham's books and read free articles you can go to http://www.doctorgraham.cc Prof. Gruben is coming out with an in-depth book called " Raw Nutritional Science. " I am looking forward to that. If you are afraid of eating too much fruit then I suggest you listen to the message from Dr. Graham and Prof. Gruben. You'll also learn why to much fat even if it is raw is very dangerous to consume. Did you know that there have been experiments taking college students and asking them to eat as much fat as they possibly can for one week and that after that one week they all had diabetes? You would think diabetes has to do with eating too much sugar when in fact it has much more to do with eating too much fat. The key is keeping your blood sugar within normal ranges. This is easy to do if you don't have a lot of fat in your diet. So the healthy raw diet is a low fat, raw food diet. Unfortunately, the average raw foodist eats about 60% of their calories from fat, many as high as 80% of calories. From my personal experience, I have found that this doesn't work. The worst thing to do is to mix a high fruit and high fat diet. Probably better to eat virtually no fruit if you are going to do that. However, there have been extensive studies on fat consumption and the conclusion seems to be that a whole host of diseases can be traced back to a high fat diet and not a high carbohydrate diet. For more information on this, I suggest you go to this link http://www.european-vegetarian.org/evu/eurocong99/audio/ and download talk # 39. Dr. Hans Diehl called Reversing Diabetes. You should also listen to his talk # 11 called Reversing Heart Disease. These are great presentations. The healthiest cultures around the world all consume a high carbohydrate diet. It's only the sickly western societies that eat so much meat and a highly processed and refined diet. Now many countries are starting to copy us and having terrible health because of it. My new options seem to be the various Sunfood and Nature's First Law books, Nison books galore and several books whose authors i have yet to hear of (books look great, though). my problem with the books that i have is that quality is #1 for me. smudgy covers and bad photos i can handle -- but bad grammar, bad recipes and questionable science i cannot. any recommendations? --nicki

Guest guest
Roger, I enjoyed listening to the recordings. Yesterday I was reading Mercola on Diabetes. He advocates a low carbohydrate high fat diet. It equates to a sort of vegetarian Atkins diet. He keeps quiet on his grass fed beef in this context. A mess it seems to me. Then Dr Diel sings praise to Dr Ornish who has a slot for whole grains and a load of other trouble. It all brings me back to your suggestion of a low fat raw diet. My rent mistake has been eating coconuts. They should be eaten only in very small quantities I suspect. Am reading on.
